For more than a decade, leaders of the IMSD@Brown program have worked not only to expand diversity among doctoral students in the University’s science, technology, engineering and math programs, but also to propel the career success of underrepresented students over the long term — in effect, increasing diversity in STEM on a much larger scale.

Amanda Elyssa is a first-generation American with parents from Colombia and Guatemala and is an active member in the Brown IMSD community. She is also the president of the Brown SACNAS chapter.
Expanding IMSD to cover all STEM fields at Brown is among the specific goals set forth in Pathways to Diversity and Inclusion: An Action Plan for Brown University. Last week the University issued a report of overall progress in the plan’s first year.
