Students don't apply directly to the IMSD – they are nominated by their program. Students must be matriculated into a Brown Ph.D. program to be considered for support by IMSD@Brown.

No, support from IMSD@Brown is only available to students in doctoral programs.

IMSD@Brown scholars receive equivalent support to any other Ph.D. student in their program. Doctoral students at Brown are guaranteed 5 years of support which includes stipend, tuition, health services fee, dental insurance and health insurance. A child care subsidy is also available to graduate student parents.

  • Brown Predoctoral Students enrolled full-time in IMSD@Brown Partner Ph.D. programs
  • Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident of the US

Most students will be appointed to the IMSD programs during their 1st or second year in their Ph.D. program. Students are typically appointed for 12 months consecutively. Students appointed to the grant are eligible to be supported for a second 12-month appointment.
