Dr. Anika Toorie '15, IMSD alum and Associate Professor of Biology at Rhode Island College, shared moving remarks, including advice for trainees:
"Be steadfast in your commitments and actions to inspire and develop the future generations of academics, scientists, policy-makers, innovators and entrepreneurs. Continue to realize the potential and capacity of diverse scholars and commit to helping them develop the skills and confidence to succeed. As you progress through your careers, form networks and connections that can be sustained long-term. You will soon transition from trainee to colleague, forging new collaborations and continuing existing ones. I also encourage you to be your best and most vocal advocate and continue to surround yourself with mentors and advisors who can help you succeed at different facets of life (you know work-life balance is a slippery slope, but identify mentors who can advise you effectively based on your personal professional aspirations). As you rise in rank, I ask you to be a source of inspiration and support for rising scholars and scientists. Move forward in life and your careers with the same tenacity and drive you exhibited as a graduate student and you will succeed. Stay encouraged and steadfast."
